General Motors made a decision to take-on the British in the lucrative sports car market. Just 6 months after the debut of the concept car at GM Motorama, the first Corvette rolled off a makeshift production line in Flint, Michigan on 30 June 1953. However the first cars were expensive and did not quite ‘fit the bill’. In the next 4 years they refined both engine and body design and in 1957 the revised styling gelled with the introduction of the most powerful engine to date, a 4-barrel carburetor 4638cc V8 which unleashed 64kW (220bhp). With this model, replicated here in fine detail, sales took off as quickly as the car accelerated - in a straight line! In 1963 the styling changed radically and today’s Corvette is still a reflection of this change. The 1962 Corvette was the last of the original traditional styling and is therefore one of the most collectible models today.
