V-8 Powers Ford to First Place

By 1934, the V-8 engine had catapulted Ford back into first place in U.S. auto production. The impact on the small truck industry was the same. While other manufacturers were still offering 4 or 6-cylinder engines, Ford’s 221 cubic inch V-8 provided unheard of power in a truck still priced under $500. Ford even increased horsepower 13% with the introduction of the Stromberg carburettor. Pickup Trucks were modified in many ways during the 1930’s. By removing the metal sides and tailgate, which necessitated the elimination of rear bumpers and side-mounted spare, a wood bed and stakes made this 1934 Ford ideal for transporting livestock and cargo.
